Ivanisevic/Muster Set Up Final Eliminator In Istanbul

Goran Ivanisevic and Thomas Muster maintained their 100% records to set up a winner-take-all match at the Turkcell Legends Cup in Istanbul on Saturday.

Ivanisevic blasted past Andrei Chesnokov 6-1, 6-1 while Muster overcame old rival Pat Cash 6-3, 6-4 on Friday.

It means that whoever wins the Ivanisevic/Muster clash on Saturday will be through to Sunday’s final.

Muster used his legendary fitness to good effect to withstand sweltering conditions against Cash. Muster’s movement proved to be the deciding factor as he broke Cash at 3-3 in the second set and raced to victory.

“I enjoy playing in heat like this,” said Muster.

“I just wish I was a fraction fitter and then you don’t suffer that much. But playing in 40 degrees, you don’t get that too often. I enjoy the heat and I enjoy playing in the sun. Goran’s been serving really well which is the key to his game. So we’ll see how I recover for tomorrow but I’ll be happy to be there on Sunday.”

Ivanisevic meanwhile, was in irresistible form. He served imperiously and barely made any mistakes from the baseline. Chesnokov made few errors but could do nothing as the Ivanisevic serve went thundering past. At one point the Russian resorted to giving his racquet to a ball boy in the hope of getting the Croatian’s serve back.

Ironically, it was Ivanisevic’s forehand and backhand that gave him the most satisfaction.

“My ground strokes were unbelievable today,” he said. “I couldn’t breath (very well because of the heat) so I had to try to hit winners and I was working really hard. If I play like this then I’ll be ok against Thomas, but if I don’t and I start to miss too much then I’ll have problems.”

In the final, the winner of Ivanisevic vs. Muster could play one of three different players. Fernando Meligeni maintained his unbeaten record with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Cedric Pioline, while Sergi Bruguera bounced back from his loss against Pioline on Thursday to defeat home player Alladin Karagoz 6-2, 6-2.

All players in each group will play each other over the first three days, and the players finishing top of each group will meet each other in the final. Those finishing second in each group will contest the 3rd/4th place play-off.
