Borg vs. McEnroe - Inside The Rivalry
Borg vs. McEnroe was arguably the greatest rivalry that tennis has ever known. They played each other 14 times on the professional circuit with their head-to-head tied at 7-7.
The tie-break that they played in the 1980 Wimbledon final is still talked about today. McEnroe won it 18-16 to level the match at two sets all, but ultimately lost in five. He would gain revenge one year later, winning his first of three titles at the All England Club. That 1981 final would be Borg’s final Wimbledon.
After Borg retired, McEnroe said he felt he had lost something special in his career, and that he never found a rival as important as the Swede again. The BlackRock Tour of Champions has enabled Borg and McEnroe to come together again and re-live their unique brand of magic in front of packed crowds all around the world. The affection that they have for each other is evident whenever they meet, and their competitiveness is still as intense as ever.
They have played each other in Eindhoven, Liege and Belfast over the past year, and thrilled spectators on every occasion. They will meet again on the BlackRock Tour of Champions in 2008. Check back with the BlackRock Tour of Champions website for field announcements.
The circuit next visits Istanbul, Turkey, 17-20 July. It will be the first time that the BlackRock Tour of Champions has visited Turkey.
