BRUGERA TO FACE FERREIRA IN ROME FINAL
Sergi Bruguera reached his second successive final on the BlackRock Tour of Champions with a 6-3, 7-6 win over Michael Stich in Rome.
Bruguera will now face Wayne Ferreira in the final after the South African overcame John McEnroe 7-6, 6-3.
“I played very well in this match and really enjoyed it,” said Bruguera.
“Every point seemed to finish with a winner, and it was great tennis,” said Bruguera, who currently shares the No.1 position in the South African Airways Champions Tour Rankings with Anders Jarryd after the events in Barcelona and Belfast.
The third/fourth place play-off will be contested between Stich and Henri Leconte.
Stich appeared on the ‘Chris Evans Show’ on BBC Radio 2 after his loss, and told the show’s presenter how he plans to use the match on Tuesday to prepare for the BlackRock Tennis Classic in Hamburg which starts on Thursday.
“I want to play well to get in form for Hamburg. I played three good matches here in Rome and enjoyed every one of them,” he said.
Goran Ivanisevic, Boris Becker and Cedric Pioline will all join Stich, Thomas Muster and Henri Leconte for the event in Hamburg.
Elsewhere in Rome on Monday, Muster defeated Paolo Cane 6-1, 6-4.
