While Michael Stich, Sergi Bruguera and Wayne Ferreira made serene progress through the group stages of the BlackRock Tour of Champions event in Rome, John McEnroe’s struggles continued.
The American had set point opportunities against Renzo Furlan in a tumultuous first set Tie-Break, but eventually went down 7-6(9), 6-2.
Stich continued his fine form, defeating Paolo Cane 7-6(4), 7-5. He will now meet Sergi Bruguera for a place in the final after the Spaniard saw off fellow French Open champion Thomas Muster 6-3, 6-2.
Wayne Ferreira also maintained his unbeaten record, defeating Henri Leconte 6-3, 6-4.
