John McEnroe saw off Mats Wilander to come through the group stages of the Honda Challenge unscathed. He won 7-5, 6-3 in a match screened live on BBC television and there was barely the need for a McEnroe tantrum. He threw in one or two for good measure, obviously.
The American will face Michael Stich in the semifinals after the German went down to Henri Leconte in a thrilling encounter on Friday. Leconte won 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 to remain undefeated in the round-robin stages of the event, and now faces Guy Forget who won the first set 6-3 against Jeremy Bates before the Briton was forced to retire injured.
BORIS TAKES OVER TO RAISE THE STAKES
Not happy with a bid of £2,100 offered by one of the spectators at the Royal Albert Hall for his and John McEnroe's signed racquets, Boris Becker took the microphone from announcer Don Goodwin and became an auctioneer for a while. "Come on, is that all you can offer?" he said. "We're in London here and I want to hear £2,500 at least, and I'll match whatever you give." After some more good-natured banter with the audience, the racquets eventually went for £5,000, and good to his word, Becker matched the figure to raise a total of £10,000 for the Mind mental health charity. He also won his first match of the week, beating Mikael Pernfors 3-6, 6-4, 10-5.
